Braces: A Guide to Straightening Your Teeth

If you're considering braces in Los Angeles as a way to straighten your teeth, you may have a lot of questions. One of the most common questions is about the colors of braces. Another is whether or not they hurt. Here's a guide to help you understand what you can expect from braces and how to make the most of your treatment.

Colors of Braces:

Braces come in a variety of colors, and you have the option to choose the color of the metal braces that will be placed on your teeth. The traditional color for braces is silver/metal, but now you can choose from a wide range of colors, including:

  • Clear: Clear braces are made of a ceramic material that blends in with your teeth, making them virtually invisible. This is a great option for people who want their teeth straightened without the hassle of needing to remember to switch out clear aligner trays.

  • Silver: Silver braces are a classic color and are most commonly used.

  • Gold: Gold braces are a unique and stylish option. I use gold braces for lingual braces, braces that go behind your teeth. This is a completely invisible system that will straighten your teeth and hide the braces from the world.

Traditional braces come with O-rings, or elastomerics, that tie the wire into the bracket. These O-rings come in a rainbow of colors including: Blue, Black, Red, Green, Pink, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Navy, Neon Green, Neon Pink, and more! Many times, patient’s will also mix and match colors for their preference or next holiday or sporting event. Feel free to express yourself by choosing the colors you want at each appointment!

Braces can come in whatever color you like!

Just make sure to avoid hard and sticky foods. Dr. Dadjoo recommends avoiding inflammatory foods and if really having a craving, sugar-free candies instead.

Will it hurt?

Braces may cause some discomfort when they are first put on and when they are tightened. This discomfort is usually described as a pressure sensation and is usually mild to moderate. It usually subsides within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen can help to alleviate any discomfort.

It is also common to experience some soreness or irritation to the inside of your cheeks, lips, and tongue when you first get braces. This is because your mouth is getting used to the new foreign objects in your mouth. Your orthodontist can provide you with wax or other materials to put over the brackets to help alleviate this discomfort.

In conclusion, braces are a great way to straighten your teeth and improve your smile. With the wide range of colors available, you can customize your braces to suit your personality and style. While there may be some discomfort associated with braces, it is usually short-lived and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
