Common Orthodontic Problems and How to Fix Them

Greetings, my friends! I'm Dr. Shaahin Dadjoo, an experienced orthodontist in Culver City dedicated to helping you achieve optimal oral health and a beautiful smile. Today, let's explore some common orthodontic problems that many individuals face and discuss the effective solutions available. Whether you're dealing with crowded teeth, an overbite, or any other concern, rest assured that there are treatments available to address these issues and pave the way to a healthier, more confident smile.

Crowded Teeth:

Crowded teeth occur when there isn't enough space in the jaw for all the teeth to align properly. This can lead to overlapping, twisting, or rotated teeth. Fortunately, orthodontic treatment can create the necessary space and align your teeth harmoniously. No child or adult deserves to have a smile that holds them back in life. Braces or Invisalign are often recommended to gradually shift the teeth into their ideal positions, providing you with a straighter smile and improving your oral health.

Overbite:

An overbite is characterized by the upper front teeth overlapping the lower front teeth excessively. In some cases, it can result in dental and jaw joint problems. Correcting an overbite is crucial not only for aesthetic reasons but also for a functional bite. Orthodontic treatments, can help reposition the teeth and jaws to achieve a more balanced bite and improve your overall oral health. These types of cases require a detailed exam and diagnosis. Not every provider is an orthodontist, and when you have complicated issues like this, its best to see someone like me, a board certified orthodontist.

Underbite:

An underbite occurs when the lower front teeth protrude forward, covering the upper front teeth. This misalignment can affect your ability to chew, speak, and even cause jaw pain. Orthodontic treatment, often in conjunction with additional dental interventions, can help correct an underbite. By gradually shifting the teeth and jaws into proper alignment, we can improve the bite and restore balance to your smile. These types of issues are best caught early, so we can try our best of using an individuals natural growth potential to improve their bites.

Crossbite:

Crossbite refers to a condition where the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth when the jaws are closed. This can cause uneven wear, jaw misalignment, and difficulty chewing. I have seen very commonly crossbites causing severe recession and periodontal issues. These are one of the things I am always on the lookout for.

Open Bite:

An open bite is characterized by the upper and lower front teeth not coming together when the mouth is closed, leaving a large gap. This condition can affect speech, cause chewing difficulties, and impact facial aesthetics. These can be complicated issues that may arise from previous thumb or tongue habits. A radiographic and functional evaluation is indicated to provide you the best information and the correct treatment plan. I’ve treated many many open bite cases successfully and would be able to help you if this category of malocclusion pertains to you.

Orthodontic problems, such as crowded teeth, overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite, can significantly impact your oral health and overall well-being.
